This is a question that puzzles many fishermen no matter how much they have fished. That's why rods are always something we talk about a lot. It is difficult. You can not find horse power, torque or acceleration specifications. The specifications that we can tell you are the carbon materials, the manufacturing methods, the action and components of a rod but at the end of the day they are the not main criteria to really compare rods. Low modulus carbon can be as good or even better than high modulus carbon for many rods. Also a large diameter butt section or a little bit more weight can make a rod to do its job much better than the ultimate finesse.
So what information can we give you? It is all about understanding the physics of casting and your personal taste. It doesn’t make a difference whether you have a fast or a medium action rod - both types can cast long and short distance. You also often hear that longer rods cast a longer line. It’s easier to control your fly line during fishing and casting while sitting on a boat with a long rod, but it’s not always the case that added length means longer casts. It is all about what you like and what suits the situation.
Another important factor is fly line. Every rod needs one to work optimally according to your taste. This can also be difficult as many of the fly lines and rods made today are not based on the AFTM standards. Vision has made things easier. For our DH rods we have marked the gram weight recommendation in addition to the traditional AFTM rating. The extra inclusion of marked gram weights on lines makes fitting rod and line easier.
The best way to find a suitable rod for you is to try before you buy. There are always shows and demo days in which you can participate. Try the rods and ask our pros` help. Always remember that most rods can do the job. The crucial thing is how you cast with them.
